At TeamKids, listening to children is part of everyday life across our services and an important part of our commitment to child safety. When children know their ideas, opinions, suggestions and feelings are valued, they develop a sense of belonging and are more likely to speak up when they need support.
Creating opportunities for children to have a voice helps us build better programs, stronger relationships and safer environments for every child.
Children Help Shape Our Programs
Our programs are nothing without the children who attend them. That’s why we prioritise spending time getting to know each child, understanding their interests, strengths and the things they enjoy most. Those conversations help each team decide the activities, clubs and experiences we provide throughout the term.
Children regularly share their ideas through group meetings, reflection journals, feedback books, group discussions and everyday one-on-one conversations with Educators. Whether it’s requesting a new cooking activity, suggesting a STEM challenge or creating a brand-new club, their feedback becomes part of our planning process.
Seeing their ideas come to life teaches children that their voice has value and that they can positively contribute to their community.
Building Trusted Relationships
Listening starts with relationships.
For many children, feeling listened to is what helps them feel safe.
Those everyday conversations build trust. They create an environment where children feel comfortable asking questions, sharing concerns and talking to Educators about what is happening in their lives.
Child Voice Supports Child Safety
Creating opportunities for children to speak and be heard is an important part of child safety.
Educators who know children well are better able to recognise changes in behaviour, identify when additional support may be needed and respond appropriately. Children who have trusted relationships with adults are also more likely to seek help, ask questions or share concerns when something doesn’t feel right.
At TeamKids, our Educators are encouraged to listen carefully, respond respectfully and take children’s concerns seriously. Every child deserves to know that their voice matters and that there are adults who will listen and act when needed.
